Carquinez Strait – Franklin Ridge Trail

Posted by on August 28, 2013

“101 Great Hikes of the San Francisco Bay Area” by Ann Marie Brown and published by Foghorn Outdoors.

Carquinez Overlook Trail
Distance: 1 to 3 miles round trip, 1-2 hours
Elevation Change: 150 feet
Level: Easy
Rating: 3 Stars

“The name “Carquinez Strait” sounds like somewplace foreign and exotic…the waterfront at Carquinez Strait is far less known…It’s the meeting place of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, where they join together to flow to the Pacific Ocean through the Golden Gate….The bluffs above the Carquinez Strait are a wonderful place for an easy hike.”

My Stats

Total Distance: 3.29 miles round trip

Time: 1:11:49

Elevation: 77 to 581 ft

Elevation Gain: 945 ft

This hike was supposed to be a two-parter with Carquinez Strait – Carquinez Overlook Trail, but I don’t see how driving over 30 minutes between trails makes them the same trip. The stats are all messed up as well so I was quite surprised after I started the climb.

My slightly-sprained ankle was also not impressed with this “easy” hike that had TWO 500ft elevation gains, each within 1/2 a mile with the more hazardous elevation drops for each gain.  It was very pretty though and worth the stop.
