William Frederick Hayden Park – Green Mountain Loop and Rooney Valley Trail

William F. Hayden Park on Green Mountain offers a challenging system of multiple-use trails for all abilities. The trails tend to dry earlier than many of the foothills parks, making the park a fantastic winter destination.

The park trails include:

  • Green Mountain Trail: 6.5 mile loop. Features a challenging ascent to the park’s highest point
  • Rooney Valley Trail: 3 miles. A challenging single track trail that offers a sense of solitude and remoteness.

This was a great starter hike that was mostly flat. Cholo was ready to call it quits at 4 miles and started to rebel at 6.5 miles. He also drank all my water except for a couple of gulps.

Here’s the stats for this trip:

  • Distance: 6.85 miles
  • Time: 2:26:16 hours
  • Avg Speed: 2.8 mph
  • Elevation Gain: 820 ft

William Frederick Hayden Park – Green Mountain Loop and Summit Loop

  • Summit Loop Trail: 2.75 miles. A very scenic trail around a portion of the park’s summit.

This was a great starter hike that was mostly flat after a short incline.  I couldn’t figure out where the trail map was until I started this post and the trails aren’t terribly well marked; especially at the trailhead.  I ended up take a weird route back to the car through the neighborhood because of a lack of trail markings.

Here’s the stats for this trip:

  • Distance: 4.95 miles
  • Time: 1:47 hours
  • Avg Speed: 2.8 mph
  • Elevation Gain: 791 ft

Bay of Fundy – Nova Scotia

I managed to get a quick hike in while we were vacationing in Nova Scotia.  I didn’t get to finish this hike because of time, and didn’t my gadgets to record anything.

This hike happened in the Bay of Fundy area.  The hike itself was quite easy, but it seemed like 100% humidity.  I was drenched like I had been swimming after only 10 minutes or so. There were also tons of mosquitoes around which made me dance as I was hiking the trail.

Bear Creek Park – Mt. Carbon Loop

This was a nice easy, fairly long hike through the park.  The only tricky bit is where the trail was washed out by the incredibly high water this year.

Here’s the stats:

  • Distance: 6.84 miles
  • Time: 2:22 hours
  • Avg Speed: 2.9 mph
  • Elevation Gain: 502 ft
