Wind Cave

Distance:         3.2 miles one way

Difficulty:        Moderate

Hiking Time:    2 hours

Elevation:        2,000 to 2,800 feet

Embracing several tracks of mountainous terrain in and around Phoenix, the Maricopa County park system provides visitors and locals alike with easy access to outstanding desert wild-lands. It is, in fact, one of the most extensive systems of county parks anywhere.  One of these eleven parks, Usery Mountain Recreation Area, is situated at the foot of Pass Mountain on the eastern end of Phoenix Metropolitan area and serves as a prelude to the expansive Superstition Mountains, which rise to the east.  A short but excellent hike with the Usery Mountain Recreation Area is the Wind Cave Trail.

February 2004

Interesting but Busy, Busy, Busy. It was fun to see most of the people bundled up for the hike because the temperature dropped to approximately 10 degrees C (50 degrees f).
