Armand Bayou Nature Center

Distance: 4.2 mile round trip

Description:

The center covers 2,500 acres and is made up of a central building and 5.0 of nature trails, which lead down to the bayou and through expanses of both coastal prairie and marshland.  The bayou and the center are named in honor of the late Armand Yrmategui, who was one of the best known naturalists in the state.

This is a cute little nature center located in the middle of the city.  I spotted several turtles, squirrels, armadillos (first “wild” ones I ever saw), and deer who didn’t seem to mind my presence but were too cagey to get a decent picture of. I’d hate to ever have to leave the trail because some of the forest looked like the spider’s home in arachnophobia with spider webs as far as the eye can see.  I pity the fool who is forced off of the path.
