Caja Del Rio Canyon

Distance:         6.0 miles, day hike

Difficulty:        Easy

Hiking Time:    3 hours

Elevation:        5,450 to 5,850 feet

“The trailless route along Canada Ancha through Caja del Rio Canyon leads through a small volcano.  Locally this canyon is called Diablo, and the devil had some fun here slicing a narrow cut through six-sided columns of hard basalt.  The route follows a wash into the depths of White Rock Canyon and to the Rio Grande, reaching the river near the site of Buckman, a railhead for logging operations on the nearby mesas during the 1920′.  Several deep caves are located on the volcano slopes, but the sheer drops below the entrances dictate that hikers stay out.”

This was a pretty disappointing hike, especially after spending some time in Santa Fe which is a very beautiful city to visit.
