Earthquake Park, Anchorage, AK

One of the biggest earthquakes in North America occurred in Anchorage.  It lasted 5 minutes and they had to re-scale the Richter Scale afterward because it was larger than the previous maximum. The clay collapsed under the stress and an entire neighborhood was lost.  Lina was excited to see the carnage, but it is just a pretty park. We donated an entire bottle of bug spray to a bus tour who forgot theirs.  they were lucky because the mosquitoes are almost as big and nasty as we had in Yellowknife.

Dock Point park, Valdez, AK

This was supposed to be the best hike in Valdez according to the people I was training.  Views from the town were better , but it was pretty.

Matanuska Glacier, AK

We spotted this Glacier from the road and saw a sign that said we could walk on it.  We were on the ice $40 and a short drive later.  Glaciers are awesome, but the water doesn’t taste very good.  Refreshingly cold, though.

Here’s a map of our route:

Kincaid Park in Anchorage Alaska

The first thing we did on our trip to Alaska was visit Kincaid Park which is the major trail that takes you from one end of Anchorage to the other. We had to turn back for some bug spray due to the deluge of mosquitoes before heading out for real.  The park and trail was beautiful, especially when an eagle landed 10-20 yards from a  picnic area.

Echo Lake and Chicago Lakes Trails

Echo Lake and Chicago Lakes Trails

From: Snowshoe Routes: Colorado’s Front Range by Alan Apt

  • Round Trip: 2 Miles; Three miles to Chicago Lakes
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Skill Level: Novice
  • Elevation Gain: 50 feet

This is an easy, almost flat family route around a sparkling frozen lake surrounded by sweeping views of soaring Front Range peaks.

Sticking to the trail is exactly as described.  The description mentions a “short side trip” that seemed like it went straight up.  Damn elevation kicks my ass.  I never did strap on the snowshoes as the snow was hard packed and other people on the trail didn’t even have any.  It took longer to get here than it did to actually do the trail.

I did get to use my bumper hook for the first time to pull out a poor couple who somehow managed to trap their car in a snow bank “flipping a bitch”.  I still can’t figure out how he did it.  He also made matters worse by trying the “floor it while reverse” method to get free.

My GPS Stats:

  • Distance: 2.55 miles
  • Time: 1:18:52
  • Elevation gain: 1,995 ft
  • Min elevation: 10,496 ft
  • Max Elevation: 12,380 ft
