Trip 4 – Sand Bench Trail

Distance:                 3.9 miles, semi-loop trail

Elevation Change:    4230/4715 feet

Suited For:               Dayhike

Difficulty:                Moderate

Introduction:    One of the many day-use trails in Zion Canyon, (This) trail offers incredible close-up views of the awe inspiring, colorful cliffs of the lower canyon from sandy bench, 600 feet from the canyon floor. The trailside terrain is clothed in a pinyon-juniper woodland typical of the park’s lower elevations.  Much of the tread is deep, soft sand churned up by horse traffic from Zion Lodge.

A very nice trail made slightly difficult because of the deep sand.  One question though, why can horses crap wherever they want, but humans are only supposed to crap in specified areas and your supposed to pick up after dogs?  Man I hate horse manure in the middle of the trail, especially one 1/4 mile section that must have a special “release” signal to the horses.
